"I Thank You God"

This poem gave me such wonderful feelings and made me think of home in so many ways. I grew up in a home where going to church every time the doors were open was necessary if you want to live in my mother's house. She required us to praise God and pray to him everyday giving thanks for all that he had done.

In Cummings view of praise, he thanks God for all that is natural and what is in nature. He thanks him for the day at hand that was not promised the day before as well as the trees and sky that God has graciously put here on Earth that is amazing.

He then goes on to ask how can God can be so close and dazed the senses yet some do not still believe. He clams he is alive once again by asking forgiveness. This to me is showing how he repented and excepted God.

"(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)"

He can now see the truth and hear God's word. This poem is jaw doping and to me takes a leap of faith in poem where most of our previous poets haven't.

  1. This poem is a very religious one indeed, as Moss stated. There is much imagery and vocabulary used in this poem to enlighten the reader on God and His existence. It is almost like the speaker is once again rejuvinated by the faith he puts into God existing... with most of his faith relying on nature and the beauty in it- he questions non-believers. The main question I got from it was, "Do you not see nature? How can you not have faith in God?" This is seemed to be answered by the speaker and his newly found faith but is still not answered by the world. Nice blog Moss.

  2. I like how this poem effected jonathan moss on a personal level, not many poems we read are geared toward any specific groups but it seems that moss has a true connection with this poem. I thought that this poem was well done and same with the blog. I agree with Moss, that cummings is thanking God and his praise. He questions non-beleivers like many of us do. Overall this poem was well written with a strong message.Moss did a good job putting the poem into prospective.

  3. i like how this poem touched moss and alot of the readers because it is one of the few poems we've read that has kind of a personal effect on the reader simply because of the imagery used to portray religion. i also like cobbs statement about how it seems Cummings is once again rejuvenated in faith in God and how he can rely on nature an beauty to fuel his faith in God. i also agree with Moss's statement about speaker says he once again feels reborn just by asking for forgiveness from God.
