Vigil Strange

"Vigil" by Walt Whitman is a a a short story describing the feeling of person that lost his son/comrade one night. this story is very depressing because it tells how how a father lost his son in a battle that they fought together, and how the father found his son lying dead. later in the story it tells how the father covered his son in blankets and buried him in a grave. this is a very depressing story because of the truth laid out in the story. Walt Whitman was a a war nurse during the civil war and therefore saw many fathers lose sons and have to bury them there on the blood stained battle fields where they died wrapped in the blankets that was used to keep them warm during the cold nights when they were sleeping or standing watch looking for enemy movement.

  1. i enjoyed the post of the vigil strange posted by nick. I think this was a good short story as well. I agree with the the son and his father as comrades fighting in a war with eachother and you saying it depressing. But i think this story was honorable because me as a father and i had to go off to war and i had my saon as a partner to me that would be a honor. But the son dieing was a disaster but his father buried him in an honorable fashion yeah it could be a story of depress but it can also be a story of happiness as well.

  2. Very good poem to analyze. This was my favorite one out of the assigned reading for Walt Whitman. I love the seen he describes as the soldier sits with his comrade who has fallen and does not leave his side. He shows the camaraderie and bond that each soldier has with one another as he watches over his dead body from night until the break of day in which he buries his friend/brother. This poem go deep withing the soldier mind and the civilians in many different way. By not naming the soldiers and by commitment shown by the fallen soldiers protector portrays how easily the American Civil War was over looked by many of Americans. Again this is a great poem and I hope to find more that touch me like this one has as the semester moves on.
