The Evening Sun
The story of the Evening Sun is one of irony and yet humorous because the constant meaningless calamity of Nancy the slave girl. To me Nancy is very unstable in her mind about her husband (Jesus) who believes that she has slept with a white man and plans to kill her for her adulteress ways. Not only is that problem angering him but also the white man they worked for could enter and exit his house when he felt like it and he was banished from stepping foot on his property, this was a major problem. It makes you think and wonder if Nancy is guilty of prostitution with her being so fearful of her husband. It got so bad even the man she worked for children knew the problem that gripped her and she was allowed for a certain time to sleep at his house, because she thought he (Jesus) would be hiding in a ditch and surprise her and kill her. At the end of the story she takes the kids home with her and is in terror of heartache that he husband has left a bloody pig bone on her table that illustrates to her her time is shortly coming to an end. I think the story was interesting and great to read although it never gave true proof or evidence of her innocence or her husbands true motive for his belief of her infidelity.

I had the same feeling towards the story mainly about the problem with Nancy and Jesus. Nancy had every right to be afraid of Jesus, she didn’t know where he was and he could have easily been hiding in a ditch like she thought. You also have to ask yourself if she being a little to skeptic. Jesus could have just been trying to scare year so that she would take him serious. It also works both ways, there’s pretty good evidence showing that she did sell herself so the reader can’t make her out to be innocent. It’s really reader dependent on the feeling toward Nancy and Jesus.
ReplyDeleteI am nancy both are afriad of Jesus, but our views of Jesus are very different. Nancy views Jesus as a cheating husband that has committed adultry. I view Jesus as the center peice of the christian religion but this is neither here nor there. Griffin's summary is very good of the story, his thoughts and ideas of what the story is trying to portray are clear and understandable. Although Griffin got a good understanding of the story, he did not really get into what he thought about the story which would have been interesting to hear. Overall excellent blog post.
ReplyDeleteFirst i think this story was a great story to read it really caught my eye. The only problem i felt that was aggrivating from this story is the fact that nancy and jesus couldnt get along and nancy hving the fear of jesus like she did. jesus trying to scare nancy and nancy not knowing where he was it was a good plan to do that to her. I agree with foster about nancy trying to make herself look innocent t the reader. i think that griffin knew his information about this story he placed it in good form.
