Babylon Revisited. Cobb.

The story talks of Charlie Wales, a man who hit it rich then went broke with his decisions. Charlie has had some rough spots in his life. He has had drinking problems to where now he only limits himself to one drink per day. Another issue is the losing of his daughter, Honoria. Honoria lives in Paris with her mother, and Charlie wants custody of her. But it does not happen. One of the things that stands out to me is the symbolism of Charlie Wales being broke. I think he is not only broke in a sense of money, but in a sense of life as well. I think that Honoria was his life and because of his drinking problems, he lost her- his life. I think that Charlie would turn back time just to have Honoria and his old life back. Not necessarily because of the money b ut because he was rich on the inside; he had Honoria and his wife. But I do not think he should be penalized for being seen with the wrong people. He should have been able to prove himself to Honoria alone, not society. And I think that was another major deal. Society at that time seemed to be focused on looking good in front of strangers instead of focusing on their own lives.

  1. Yes Mr. Cobb is right Charlie has had some rough spots in his life but, if you read the story fully you also can see that he has made a transition for the best in loosing his idea of a spontaneous life and vigorously drinking of alcohol. It is for the love of his daughter and the result that occurred with his wife that caused her much dreaded fate that has brought him to the conclusion of living a better life. Even though at the end of the story he has to wait at least a year to get full custody of his child he is persistent and decides that he will wait however long it takes.

  2. i agree with this post because i see were charlie had problems throughout his life like trying to impress his friends instead of being there for his wife an daughter. i also agree with cobbs statement about how when he lost his daughter honoria he also lost his life i think fact is proven about he comes back to paris trying to take her home with him an also how he now only had one wiskey a day instead of drinking all day long an going to parties. i also agree with cobbs statement about how charlie should not have been penalized for being with his old friends but be seen as how he has changed his life around an truly deserves his daughter.

  3. I enjoyed this story just as much as cobb did. This story was touching and appealed to me as it did to many members of the class. Babylon Revisited had a really interesting plot and a solid story line that would make for a interesting movie. I agree with cobb that maybe charlie might have money now and maybe he is sober, but he is still missing one of the best thigns that are in his life which is his daughter. Many people dont know what is important untill its gone, when charlie was drinking he took it for granite but now he understands the importance of being a father and needs his daughter back so he can live a good life and for her to have a good life.In this story, people can change, if society wants to face it or not.

  4. I really didnt like this story that much but i really understood it. i understood that one character in this story had issues that he could handle. He would rather be there for his friends than his family. I think cobb really explains the character and what his problems where and why he couldnt keep his family in a stable position in his life. But he tried gtting himself back in order by cutting down on his drinking which had been cut dwn to one drink a day. I agree with the fact that he was penilized because when you have family you cant be the same person you were with your old friends some things have to stop when you have people that you must be there for .
